We’re excited to announce our newest course! Offered by School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Making Meaning: An Introduction to Designing Objects, Part I examines the work of today’s designers.

Practical or luxurious, the design behind even the most common objects is purposeful and deliberate. This course aims to explore the theories and practices of object design and the techniques designers use to instill style and substance within objects.

Topics spanning the course will include the product design landscape and language, as well as understanding design as a generative process. From conceptualization to model iteration, students will closely examine how each step of the process yields objects positioned within a larger contextual framework. The significance of power relations and semiotic structures underlying object-making will be a focus of investigation.

Introduction to Designing Objects will be taught by designer and co-founder of design studio Parsons & Charlesworth Tim Parsons. The course features interviews with accomplished contemporary designers to offer a deeper knowledge into the methods and scope of thinking across design disciplines.
