Introducing our newest online music technology course, Designing Synthesizer Sounds. Provided by the Berklee College of Music, the course will explore modern synthesis techniques for composition, with an emphasis on its musical and emotional significance.

As a deeper study of sound design and synthesis, the course is intended to build on your skillset through an in-depth look at sophisticated music composition techniques. All you’ll need is a MIDI keyboard and DAW of your choice. Enrolling in the course also gets you a free 90-day trial of Strobe, a flexible and popular polysynth software used throughout the course.

Consisting of four sessions, this course will help you learn to develop expressive sounds, and you’ll be able to work with your peers to perfect them.

By the end of the course, you will have an understanding of the components for subtractive synthesis, and designing customized sounds for bass, drums, FX, and other core musical roles. These combined outcomes will help you build your compositional expertise on both a technical and emotional level.

All you need to get started in this course is some experience with digital audio workstations (DAWs), and using VST, AAX, or AU plugins.

The course is taught by Loudon Stearns, media-artist and associate professor at Berklee College of Music. Working in Berklee’s Contemporary Writing and Production Department, he is well-versed on contemporary electronic styles and helping students utilize music technology within their projects. He’s also the instructor for our popular Sound Design With Kontakt course!

The course is open now, so enroll below for free, or check out the first session: Getting Started and Creating Draft 1.
