You’re scrolling through your Facebook feed, when all of a sudden, your thumb stops. Suddenly, you’re focusing on a colorful, animated video from TedEd. Once that’s over you return to scrolling, occasionally stopping for another vibrant image.

Captivating content found on Facebook and other social media is dependent on graphic design. What’s astounding is the amount of information that can be shared with the world in a few words. Graphic designers are able to seamlessly blend images with typography to help the audience receive messages. They’re able to effectively do this by using the correct software.

Some of the software that graphic designers use: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, After Effects, and Sketch. But if you’re just testing the field out, there are many free ones available such as Canva, GIMP, Inkscape, and Vctr.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, graphic design careers are competitive and the industry will remain competitive well into the future. However, graphic design is ever-evolving, so it’s important that you are able to set yourself apart from other candidates with the right training and skillset.
